EBay Inc. announced a new feature called “resell on eBay” that will allow users to more easily list clothing for resale.
The feature will work using technology from Certilogo, which provides digital ID and authentication for apparel using artificial intelligence (AI). EBay acquired Certilogo in 2023.
The workflow will leverage AI to simplify the overall process for consumers who want to create listings for their used clothing on eBay and participate in the circular economy, the online marketplace said.
“eBay is focused on delivering solutions to brands while curating an elevated marketplace for buyers and sellers,” said Charis Marquez, global general manager of fashion at eBay. “Reducing friction and removing barriers to brands and consumers engaging in recommerce is crucial to fostering a pre-loved fashion marketplace. Our new resell feature helps brands keep their product out of landfill while giving consumers an incredibly easy way to give their item a second life.”
EBay ranks No. 6 in Digital Commerce 360’s Global Online Marketplaces database. The database ranks the 100 largest such marketplaces by third-party gross merchandise value (GMV).
How ‘resell on eBay’ will work
When an eBay user scans the QR code on a product’s label, they will see a “resell your garment” button. If they click on the button, they’ll be able to check that the item is authentic using Certilogo’s system through their eBay account.
After the authentication process is complete, eBay will automatically create a listing prefilled with information about the item. Then, the user will be directed to the listing, where they can edit or add additional information before the listing is public.
“This new ‘resell on eBay’ feature was a natural next step for Certilogo’s innovation and product evolution,” said Michele Casucci, CEO and founder of Certilogo. “With 540 million products already connected by our secure digital IDs, our mission is to empower brands by helping them create an experience that blends the physical with the digital world. Being able to securely resell your products with ease only makes the circular shopping experience more accessible for everyone.”
Italian retailer Save The Duck will be the first to test out the new tool beginning in May. EBay plans to expand the service to other retailers in the future, it said.
eBay financial results
The marketplace reported revenue grew 2% to $2.56 billion in its fiscal Q1 ended March 31, 2024. That’s equivalent to Q4 2023 revenue, the highest since Q1 2021. GMV was up slightly, growing 1% year over year to $18.6 billion.
Motor parts and accessories were the largest contributor to eBay’s growth in Q1, the marketplace said. Collectibles also remained important, and eBay invested in new features including price guides and authentication partnerships to facilitate more sales. It also launched a simplified listing tool for sports trading cards to prefill a listing with relevant information. That led to a double-digit percentage reduction in listing time and increases in the number of listings and items sold per customer, eBay said.
eBay also continued to invest in its live shopping beta test. It enabled live shopping on desktop, which enhanced homepage discoverability with personalized recommendations, it said.
